Return to Zero Preview

Return to Zero
The one who has something to protect always loses, but sometimes it’s worth losing the fight.
Humans are cruel and selfish beings. Don’t get close to them. Kill them all. Destroy everything without hesitation. Those were Ren’s rules, and they were until she met Caelan. There were some humans who were idiotically selfless. They showed little concern for their own wellbeing and helped others without expecting anything in return.
That’s what he was like; optimistic, pure and kind-hearted. The sort of people who were always taken advantage of, easily broken and killed.
Morons.

Access granted. The two words flashed boldly in red, blinking on the computer screen. A window opened, displaying the files. The glare of the monitor reflected on the lenses of the woman, her face lit up by the glow. A flash drive was inserted into the machine.
“It’s loading the data.” After a few more commands, a picture of a young Chinese girl popped up on the screen. Information on her replaced it before a dialog window signaled the completion of the task. The woman turned to her companion, the same girl in the digital photograph. “Ren. That’s your new name.”
Ren fixed the strange rod on her belt. A number eight was emblazoned on her shirt, bright like a neon sign.
The woman crouched down to her height. She placed her hands on the fragile-seeming shoulders. “I’m sorry…I’m sorry… You’re only a child, but they’re making you do things like this.” A strand of dirty blonde hair fell over the older female’s face when she bowed her head.
“Why are you the one apologizing?” The little girl pushed the hair back, her head tilted in a picture of childish curiosity.
“Ren, I was the one who founded this project. I…I didn’t know they were going to use my research for something like this. It’s all wrong…horrible…”
Thin arms wrapped around the woman’s neck, a small body pressed against hers. Ren tried to offer her some form of comfort. “You can quit, can you not?”
“I can’t. I’ve killed too many people, used their genetic data to create pitiful lives. I can’t live any other way.” She sat on the cold tiles, her hands resting limply on Ren’s shoulders. Guilt seeped out of every fibre of the woman’s body.
“Am I pitiable, Mrs. Weaver?” The question was soft, innocent. It was too innocent for someone who had seen much suffering in her mere ten years.
Her body bore no scars, it was flawless even though she’d been subjected to inhumane experiments to help “better” the human population. The child was a like a toy to them, something interesting to play with until they became tired of her. The scientist felt responsible for creating her, bringing her into the world to be treated like a freak.
Mrs. Weaver patted the child’s head. Her arm wrapped around her protectively, as if that alone could shield her from the cruelty of their world. “…the most.”

This is the first short story in the Celiba collection, which I'll be posting on inkpop as a sort of poll. Just so I know which storyline will grab the most attention. The actual story will be in first person. I just wrote it in third because I attempted to write an entry for Yullen week yesterday and that was in third person.

Story Outlines

I'm confusing myself with the storylines. I'm writing seven interrelated standalone books with an overlapping general plot. Return to Zero's already confusing enough by itself with its weird format. I guess I'll have to put an eight to ten year difference in between Ren and the other characters. I'm planning for these stories to be read on their own or as a series in any order.

Return to Zero's a story about an artificial human soldier. She was created using data gathered from a criminal, like the other Numbers. She was trained since "birth" to kill. At ten years old, she's sent to blend into society and act as an undercover assassin, eliminating the ones the government has deemed undesirable.

Retrace is about a writer struggling with an unrecorded disease. She attempts to write the story of the assassin in Return to Zero.

Rewrite is the story following the MC of Retrace's death. Her friend is having a hard time dealing with her death, so he deludes himself into thinking her brother is her because of their similar attitude.

Cantarella is a one-sided romance story. It's about a bodyguard/butler and his obsessive love for his mistress, who happens to be a part of the government resistance group.

Monochromatic is the story of a genius scientist creating soldiers for Cantarella's group. She drags in a survivor from an assassination from Return to Zero. The story is written from the survivor's POV.

Sortir de son Silence is the first side of a story. It focuses on the mute butler's side of the story.

Facade d'Honnetete is the second side. It focuses on the master's side of the story. It explains his view on their relationship.

Character Interview #2

Alright, now we're going to torture...ahem, interview Jaeden Isaac from Monochromatic.

Temporary picture. But still hot. (Nea, please don't kill me.)
Fantasizing about man love is what keeps Kaye happy. Diehard yaoi fangirl activate!
1. If you had a free day with no responsibilities and your only mission was to enjoy yourself, what would you do?
Get away from all the freaks in this damn city.
2. What impression do you make on people when they first meet you? How about after they've known you for a while?
Why should I give a fuck about what other people think of me?
3. What's your idea of a good marriage? Do you think that'll happen in your life?
Marriage is annoying. You promise to stay together until death, but it never lasts. Why bother?
4. What are you most proud of about your life?
Living when everyone else from my hometown was slaughtered. Serves them right, bastards.
5. What are you most ashamed of in your life?
I can't believe I let Mikhail do that to me. Multiple times. A few times with his not-so mute sadist friend and the whiny he-bitch.
6. If you could spend the day with someone you admire (living or dead or imaginary), who would you pick?
I'd rather be alone. There's no one I admire.
7. Do you think you've turned out the way your parents expected?
They wouldn't be forcing me to take anger management courses if I did.
8. What do you believe about God? (If they believe in God, ask "What do you suppose God thinks of you?")
I don't believe in God.
9. Is there anything you've always wanted to do but haven't done? What would happen if you did it?
I've always wanted to kill Skye. Nea would...she'd... *shudders*
10. What's the worst thing that's happened in your life? What did you learn from it?
I met the real Nea and not the fake one I thought I was dating. I learned that the woman is batshit crazy (the fake one is only half as insane) and she loves dressing up as a guy to drag me out on dates. It looks like we're homos, which entertains her to no end.
11. Tell me about your best friend.
Would seriously trying to murder Nathan be considered friendship? I have no fucking clue why he likes hanging around me. Is he retarded or just a masochist?
12. What's the worst thing you've ever done to someone? Why?
Pissing off Dominic. He's such a fake ass bastard, trying to act all nice and gentlemanly. He's even worse than I am. Never again. He broke my arm and gave me a limp (along with permanent mental scarring). The cuts were nothing compared to that.
13. What would you like it to say on your tombstone?
"Later, losers."
14. Describe your ideal mate.
I'd rather not say anything. Nea might find out and decide that my head needs to be rewired or something.
15. What are you most afraid of?
Nea when she's PMS-ing. She's already scary enough when she's normal.
16. What's the most important thing in your life? What do you value most?
...Mikhail. Even if he's like that, he's my only blood relative who didn't drop out on me.
17. What do you like best about yourself? Least?
Being exotic-looking has its pros and cons. I get free stuff and occassionally, job offers. The bad side is I get creepy stalkers and forced to have sex with my twin brother and his gay friends. Apparently, I'm fun to torture. (Yes Jade, you are fun to torture. Nothing like teasing an ass to start your day...double entendre FTW! XD)
18. What do you like best about [the other character]? Least?
Nea? I don't hate the fact that she doesn't think like a normal girl's supposed to. I can talk to her and not feel like she's some sort of alien...most of the time. She loses everyone when she starts talking about her genius-type job. That hobby of creating androids creeps me the fuck out.
19. How do you feel about your life right now? What, if anything, would you like to change?
My life is shitty. What's the point of fantasizing of a better life if I can make it happen with my own hands? Besides, watching your back constantly and shooting shitheads is what makes it interesting.
20. Are you lying to yourself about something? What is it?
I'm completely straight and I hate it when Mikhail tries weird shit on me. (Yup, you totally don't beg for it like a bitch in heat.)

Ribbon Animals

Here's the link for the artist's site: http://www.ribbonesia.com/top.html

DIAMONDS!

Since it's almost Christmas, I made a Chrismas tree just outside my treehouse. Nothing special. I should use the coloured yarn as presents...

I finished digging out a basement. Those are chests, furnaces and crafting tables you see on the sides.

Mineshaft

Even though I got lost while mining (don't worry, I found my way back), I mined forty diamonds in one trip. I was wandering underground for a couple of hours and freaking out when I found teal specks in the rock. I am not lying, I found that much underneath my house. I combined my haul with some more I found earlier on.

Cupcakes and Character Interview #1

Before anything else, this is now my favourite cupcake recipe: Mini Mint Chocolate Chip Cupcakes

Now then, let's interview Nathan Hazlett from Cantarella! These questions are taken from Laurie Campbell's blog

Temporary picture. Too lazy to draw and colour my own.

1. If you had a free day with no responsibilities and your only mission was to enjoy yourself, what would you do?
I don't want a free day because I love my job. It doesn't even feel like I'm working whenever I'm serving my princess.
2. What impression do you make on people when they first meet you? How about after they've known you for a while?
I tend to come off as exuberant, or as Jaeden likes to put it, "the Energizer bunny on crack mixed with sugar". That being said, I scare off a good bit of people and my friends want to punch my face in at times.
3. What's your idea of a good marriage? Do you think that'll happen in your life?
Oh, well just a small wedding with close friends and family would be alright with me. Jaeden would be my best man, Caelan would be the bridesmaid whether he likes it or not...
I'm not holding my breath for it. Marcella's pretty stubborn. She's the only one who's lasted this long against my natural charms and good looks.
4. What are you most proud of about your life? (If they answer with something other than a personal statement, like a business achievement, ask "What about on a personal level?")
Hm...I guess getting Marcella to not point a gun at me everytime she sees me is something to be proud of...
5. What are you most ashamed of in your life? (Again, if necessary ask "What about on a personal level?")
Too many to list, but falling asleep and waking up in a leather stripper costume takes the cake. I didn't even notice until I walked into Marcella's room to bring her breakfast. I'm pretty sure Mikhail had something to do with it.
6. If you could spend the day with someone you admire (living or dead or imaginary), who would you pick?
I'd pick Marcella.
7. Do you think you've turned out the way your parents expected?
They don't really give a shit about me. They tried to sell me to some guy to pay off their gambling debt.
8. What do you believe about God? (If they believe in God, ask "What do you suppose God thinks of you?")
Are you seriously asking that in 2054? There is no God and there never has been.
9. Is there anything you've always wanted to do but haven't done? What would happen if you did it?
I've always wanted to take Marcella out on a date. But two things are preventing me from doing that. One, there's no way she'd agree to it. Two, if she steps outside, we'd get attacked. If going on a date was possible, I'd take her to a book store, then an ice cream parlor.
10. What's the worst thing that's happened in your life? What did you learn from it?
Getting chased by that scary guy and almost killed for my organs. That was also the best thing in my life because that's how I met my princess.
11. Tell me about your best friend. (If you think it might be interesting, ask "How did you meet? What do you like about this person? What do they like about you?")
Jaeden Isaac and Caelan Weaver are my best friends. I met Caelan in grade seven. He hasn't changed a bit since then. Still girly and too adorable for his own good. He attracts a lot of rapists and he's still oblivious to it. Ren had a field day beating them up.
I met Jaeden through Caelan. They're cousins. He used to be a tiny little thing, and now he's a chick magnet with his tanned skin, white hair and abs. He catches the attention of the same sex too...including his twin brother's... Too bad his social skills are the same level as a cactus' and his temperance is as cool as the surface of the sun. It's so fun to get him riled up. Just call him Jade and run like the devil's at your heels.
12. What's the worst thing you've ever done to someone? Why? ("Why" is usually a good follow-up question to any response!)
Not counting the numerous times I've forced Caelan into a dress? I killed some guys. They were targeting my beloved Marcella. I can't let them do that.
13. What would you like it to say on your tombstone?
"I'm coming back for your brains."
14. Describe your ideal mate.
Marcella.
15. What are you most afraid of?
Being separated from the girl of my dreams. I don't care if you kill me, just let me die for her sake.
16. What's the most important thing in your life? What do you value most?
I think that's pretty obvious by now.
17. What do you like best about yourself? Least?
I like to think I'm a good friend, y'know, someone you can go to for advice (I can't be held responsible if you follow my advice), a listener, things like that. I hate the fact that I can't leave anyone alone. I'm easily moved by what's in front of my eyes, so I'll always stop to help, even if it's not wanted.
18. What do you like best about [the other character]? Least?
I love everything about Marcella. The way she screams at me for staring at her like a creepy old guy, her ridiculously good aim, the shampoo she uses...
19. How do you feel about your life right now? What, if anything, would you like to change?
I'm content where I am now, but I'd want to be somewhere peaceful where I don't have to carry a gun with me just to go outside.
20. Are you lying to yourself about something? What is it?
I don't know if I'm lying to myself. Am I?

Treehouse Interior Minecraft

So I fixed that huge gap that was burnt to ashes by the lava. I laid down some wooden slabs for the floor.

Flooring
I started building a staircase with a waterfall in the middle. The waterfall is in this glass cage.
Unfinished waterfall cage

Unfinished staircase
So nothing really interesting happened today, unless you count me screaming the working song from the Smurfs movie off-key. Now, I'm going to put my dog outside and see if he jumps up from the snow like a kangaroo.

Treehouses and Evil Little Sisters!

Finally managed to get some screenshots of my work in progress treehouse in Minecraft.

Draining the indoor lake

Drained. Looks kinda like a chessboard.

Screwing around with lava. I also played with TNT. I spent a good bit trying to level out the water. OCD!

NEVER listen to your little sister while playing Minecraft. She told me to put lava inside. I, being somewhat braindead, agreed. It looked pretty...until the walls caught on fire. I just rebuilt the lookout and stopped the flow of water. There's still a side missing.

K: "You broke my house!"
A: "I didn't break it. I told you to break it."
My little brother was laughing his little head off with my sister while I was screaming at the laptop.

Lesson learned. Lava pools may look pretty, but not in treehouses!

Well Played, Marianas Trench, Well Played

Their song "Haven't Had Enough" is perfectly named. You'll never get enough of it.
I'm working as an unofficial editor for another inkie (I'm Kaye Dominique on inkpop) and my strange sense of humour has once again distracted me.
This was in my critique:
"What the heck is a secret grin? Is it the husband of the secret smile and is cheating on it with the secret smirk and having steamy man sex?"
I swear I'm a lot more serious when critiquing. My critique for the story's prologue and first chapter was almost a thousand words.
I've also discovered TobyGames on YouTube. I will say unto you, the words of the great Tobuscus, "Bless your face, and if you sneezed during this post, bless you. Boop."

Short Stories and Epic Treehouses

I'm thinking of writing seven short stories which are basically summaries or my seven books. I've already written Cantarella and posted it on inkpop before I took it down to enter it in a contest. Maybe I can get people to vote on what they think I should write first? Yup, totally hooked on Minecraft. I figured out how to switch between survival and creative mode, so I'm going to build my decked out treehouse before going back to survival mode. I've already laid out the basic layout, just have to keep working at it.

Burn it all!

Yes, I just discovered flint and steel in Minecraft. I burnt down trees and a sheep (I'm sorry, Phillip!).
I found some obsidian too, but I died and forgot to put my bed down again. I lost all my stuff and respawned in an unfamiliar area.
On the bright side, one of my guy friends copied his Minecraft folder to mine, so now I can play without an Internet connection. Yes, I have guy friends. I actually like talking to guys way more than girls I don't know. My female best friends all act like dudes at random times.

Fire Alarms and Link Plushies

The fire alarm went off in my school for the second time this week. The first time, it was because of our woodworking classroom. The other day, it was because of burning pizzas. (I'm serious.) We had to go out in windy winter weather. I felt bad for the little kids in the attached daycare. But some of the kids who are all around assholes gave up their jackets for the kids and huddled around them to block the wind. It was sweet. I would've done the same, but I don't think they want my germs. I might give them my cold.

I CAN'T TYPE WITH MY NIBLETS!

APH: Global Warming, Solved
The title? That's what I was screaming after I found one of those paper guillotine things in my French class. (I don't know what it's called.) We had a discussion about what would happen if Agent_Chip stuck her fingers under it with me around. Hence, "I can't type with my niblets!"
We also made King's cakes in there. One of the other girls dumped coloured sugar and sprinkles on it.
